I pray that they may be one, just as you and I are one ….

The word “sangha” is a Bengali word that means “together”. It expresses relationship and collective identity. As the number of churches grew in Bengal, and in order to develop a better cooperation between them, a SANGHA was established in 1922.  In 1935 this SANGHA became the “Bengal Baptist Union” and was based at the BMS house 95 Eliott Road, Kalkata-16.

In 1952 the 7th Assembly of Bengal Baptist Union was held at Sreerampur and two separate Unions were formed: the West Bengal Baptist Union and the East Pakistan Baptist Union. A committee was formed for the East Pakistan Baptist Union: President Dr N.C.Ghosh; Vice President Dr W.B.Davis; Treasurer Rev Gordon Soddy; Secretary Rev R.N.Baroi (Rajendra Nath Baroi).

At the General Assembly of the Bengal Baptist Union in Barisal on 26th-28th October 1955 the name Pakistan Baptist Sangha was adopted, but after the independence of Bangladesh the name was changed to Bangladesh Baptist Sangha (BBS) in 1972. Finally, on 26th January 2001 Council Meeting of BBS & the General Assembly of 28th-29th June 2001, the name was changed to the one we have today Bangladesh Baptist Church Sangha (BBCS), or as it is often called, SANGHA.
