Rooted in the legacy of William Carey and Ignatius Fernandez, the story of BBCS is one of faith, growth, and Gospel mission across generations.
Our History
The history of the Bangladesh Baptist Church Sangha (BBCS) is deeply rooted in the heart of Christian mission in South Asia. As the oldest and largest Protestant denomination in Bangladesh, our journey is a testimony to God’s faithfulness and the power of the Gospel to transform lives and communities.
A Legacy That Began with a Mission
Our origins trace back to the work of the renowned missionary Dr. William Carey, who arrived in Kolkata (then Calcutta) in 1793 with a vision to bring the Gospel to Bengal. In 1796, Carey extended his mission into what is now northern Bangladesh, particularly the Dinajpur district.
The first Baptist church in Bangladesh was founded in 1806, in a place called Sadamahal, under the spiritual guidance of Ignatius Fernandez, one of Carey’s early associates and fellow missionaries.
This humble beginning marked the birth of a movement that would grow over the next two centuries, impacting thousands of lives and communities throughout the country.
The Growth of the Church
In time, the Baptist movement spread throughout Bengal, eventually becoming more established in East Bengal (now Bangladesh). A key center of activity was Sreerampur, from where mission, translation work, and church planting efforts were coordinated.
Throughout this history, BBCS has remained faithful to the call of God — proclaiming the Gospel, planting churches, making disciples, and responding with compassion during times of need.
Celebrating 225 Years of Ministry
In 2022, BBCS celebrated 225 years of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ in the Bengal region. This historic milestone was more than a moment of remembrance — it was a recommitment to our mission, vision, and calling.
On this special occasion, we renewed our dedication to grow spiritually and strategically over the next decade. Our commitment to planting churches, training leaders, empowering women, serving the poor, and reaching the unreached was reaffirmed with passion and purpose.
Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future
While we honor our history, we are not bound by it. Our faith is not in the past but in the living God who continues to work today.
From small beginnings in Sadamahal to a dynamic network of 390+ churches today, BBCS continues to stand as a light in the darkness — proclaiming Christ, loving people, and serving our beloved Bangladesh.
“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; His greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall praise Your works to another.” – Psalm 145:3-4
We thank God for our heritage, and we look forward to the future — empowered by His Spirit, guided by His Word, and committed to His mission.
